Who took the pictures on this site, and what we changed
Most of the photographs on Great Wide Open were taken by other people and published under open licences. Those licences ask three things of us in return: that we name the photographer, that we say where the picture came from and on what terms, and that we are honest about any changes we made. This page does all three, page by page, for 302 images across 86 pages.
It exists because our page headers are set behind the page title, where there is no room for a caption. Rather than print a credit across the corner of someone's photograph, we keep the full record here and link to it from the footer of every page.

The tables below run by country, then by page in alphabetical order: Australia (34 pages), South Korea (18), New Zealand (30), Hong Kong (1), Japan (1), China (1) and Journeys (1). Each page title links to the page itself, and each original links to the photographer's own file, where you can see the picture as they took it. Where a photographer publishes under a handle rather than a name, we use the handle, because that is the name the licence asks us to credit.

What we do to a photograph, and what we don't
Most images here are cropped and resized, and nothing else. We cut the shape the page needs out of the original and reduce it to the size it will be shown at. We do not add or remove anything in the frame.
A few have had more done to them, and the table says so wherever it happened. Some are lightly sharpened. Two had their colour or contrast lifted because the original was hazy. Two had a corner or their lower third darkened so that a white page title could be read over them. One page header, Day trips from Cairns, sets five photographs side by side as a single image, and all five photographers are credited.
Where a page header looks darker than the original, that shading is usually applied by the page and is not part of the picture. The two exceptions are marked in the tables.
That matters beyond the licences. A travel page that quietly improves its photographs is making a promise about a place that the place may not keep, so we would rather tell you what was done than have you wonder.
Share-alike, and what it does and does not cover
152 of the images above are published under a share-alike licence, which means anything we make from them has to carry the same terms. So our cropped versions of those images are themselves offered under the same licence, and you are free to use them on the same basis we did: name the photographer, link the licence, and say what you changed.
That obligation attaches to the images and to nothing else. The writing on this site is not covered by those licences, and using a share-alike photograph does not place the text of a page under share-alike terms.

The licensed material above is provided by its licensors as-is and without warranties of any kind, to the extent the licences allow. The full terms are at the licence links in the tables, and they govern wherever this page is an imperfect summary of them.
What this record does not yet cover
This record covers the images added or replaced since mid-September 2026, when we began keeping it. Pages built before then are still being worked through, and some of them carry pictures that are not listed here yet. We add them as each page is rebuilt, and the date at the top of this page tells you when the record last changed.
Embedded maps are supplied by their map provider under that provider's terms and are not listed.
If you believe an image is credited wrongly, or that something of yours is being used without a licence that permits it, please tell us and we will correct or remove it. We would far rather be told than be right by accident.
