Where to Stay in Gwangju

Downtown by the square, the new towers of Sangmu, or a bed by the fast trains: where to sleep in Gwangju, and what each gives up

For a first visit, stay downtown, within a walk of the Asia Culture Center. The square, the art quarters, the cafés and the markets are all on foot, and in our sample it was the cheapest of the three areas as well as the best placed.

The short answer
  • The sights, the cafés and the markets on foot: Downtown. Our default.
  • A larger modern hotel, with the metro into town: Sangmu.
  • A dawn train or a late arrival: Songjeong Station.
The basis: researched, not stayed in. Price bands come from our own sample of rooms for two nights in November 2026.

Gwangju is a city of about 1.4 million people, and it is long rather than round. The old downtown, where the city’s history happened and its art now lives, is at the eastern end, under Mudeungsan. The fast trains arrive at the western end, twelve kilometres away, and the newer business district of Sangmu lies between, on the one metro line that joins them. So the choice is mostly about which end of that line you want to wake up at. Our guide to Gwangju covers what to see, and our guide to where to eat in Gwangju covers the food.

How this page was madeWe have not yet been to South Korea, and this guide is researched rather than remembered. It draws on the city’s tourism site; on Gwangju News and the Korean press; on the hotels’ own web pages where we could find them; and on our own sample of prices, read on the date below. Where sources disagree, we say so. When we go, we will say so here.

The stars are a quick read across the qualities most travellers weigh up — more stars means a stronger fit for that quality, not “better” overall. Price is shown as a band rather than stars, since cheaper isn’t a virtue in itself. Evenings means how much there is to do on foot after dark. Transport means how easily you reach the KTX station and the airport.

Price positions are relative to the other areas in this table, not market rates. They come from our own sample of places on one booking site, the first ten offered within about a kilometre of each area’s centre (only three came up at Songjeong), for the two nights of 13 and 14 November 2026, a Friday and a Saturday, two adults, read on 13 October 2026. The middle price for the two nights was about £86 downtown, £139 in Sangmu and £103 at Songjeong. Those nights fall on the closing weekend of the 2026 Biennale, which may have raised prices a little everywhere.

Where the areas are

Painted map of Gwangju for staying, north at the top. Area one, Downtown, lies in the east round the Asia Culture Center, with Dongmyeong-dong beside it, Mudeungsan beyond, and the Gwangju stream along its south-western edge, across which is Yangnim-dong. Area two, Sangmu, is in the middle of the city, west of the stream. Area three, Songjeong Station, is at the far west beside Gwangju Airport, across the Yeongsan River. The U-Square bus terminal and Gwangju Station are on downtown’s northern edge, and the Biennale quarter to the north.
The three areas, numbered as on our where-to-eat map. Line 1 of the metro joins all three, from Songjeong through Sangmu to downtown. The map is painted to show how the places lie, not measured: Songjeong Station is about twelve kilometres from downtown.

Stop counts are from the published list of Line 1 stations. We found no published journey time from Songjeong to downtown; at thirteen stops over about thirteen kilometres, our estimate is about half an hour. A metro ride costs ₩1,100 with a transport card, by one guide. Gwangju’s taxis start at ₩4,800 since October 2025, and the local press quoted a fare of ₩9,300 for the seven kilometres from Songjeong to City Hall in Sangmu at rush hour.

Why stay here?

Downtown is the old centre of Gwangju, and almost everything a visitor comes for is in it or a walk from it. Democracy Square and the restored Provincial Office are at its heart, with the Asia Culture Center filling the block behind them. The covered shopping streets of Chungjang-ro run north and west from the square. Dongmyeong-dong’s cafés are a few minutes east, Art Street and Daein Market a few minutes north, and Yangnim-dong’s lanes just across the stream. Two metro stations, Culture Complex and Geumnamno 4-ga, serve it. After dark the shopping streets of Chungjang-ro stay busy, and from June to October Daein Market holds a night market of food stalls on Fridays and Saturdays.

It was also the cheapest of our three areas: half the rooms in our sample cost less than about £86 for two nights. What it does not have is many large modern hotels. Most of the places we were offered were small independent and design hotels, and only one belonged to a big chain.

Good for
  • The sights, cafés and markets on foot
  • The lowest prices in our sample
  • Evenings in Chungjang-ro and Daein Market
Watch for
  • Half an hour or more by metro from the KTX
  • Few large hotels
  • Busy streets round Chungjang-ro
Where we would look
Formerly the Ramada Plaza Chungjang, on the Chungjang-ro side of downtown, with 95 rooms. The hotel says its rooms overlook Mudeungsan and the Gwangju stream, and a large mural on its outside wall tells the story of the city’s fight for democracy, according to the local press. It was the dearest downtown hotel in our sample. One of two Gwangju hotels that Lotte took over from Ramada and renamed in March 2026; the local press reported that both stay open while their rooms are renovated in stages, so ask for a renovated room. Bookable for our sample dates on 13 October 2026.
Small and design hotels
Most of the downtown rooms in our sample were in small independent hotels within a kilometre of the Asia Culture Center. We could not confirm a website of its own for any of them, so we name none. Filter the booking sites by distance from the Asia Culture Center or Culture Complex station, and read the recent reviews for noise. Checked 13 October 2026.
Pause and notice

Go down to the Gwangju stream early, before the city is properly awake, and walk a stretch of the path along its bank. Look east, upstream, for Mudeungsan, and watch where the first light lands on it. Notice what the water is doing over the stones, and which birds are already working the shallows. Listen for the moment the traffic on the bridges overtakes the sound of the stream. Then turn back towards Democracy Square, ten minutes away, and notice how quickly the city closes round you again.

Why stay here?

Sangmu is the new Gwangju, between downtown and the KTX station: City Hall, the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center, office towers and the city’s larger modern hotels. Gwangju News called it a “well-planned out” district of restaurants, bars and karaoke rooms, and the 5·18 Memorial Park, with a memorial bearing the names of the victims, is beside it. It is nine stops from downtown on the metro, and four from the KTX station.

It was the dearest of our three areas: half the rooms in our sample cost more than about £139 for two nights. What you buy is a bigger, newer hotel, and evenings on foot among the restaurants. What you give up is the city you came to see, which is a metro ride away.

Good for
  • Larger, newer hotels
  • Restaurants and bars on foot
  • Quicker to the KTX and the airport
Watch for
  • The dearest area in our sample
  • Nine metro stops from the sights
  • Office district by day

Why stay here?

Gwangju Songjeong is the city’s fast-train station, on its western edge, about twelve kilometres from downtown. The KTX and SRT from Seoul stop here, the metro starts here, and Gwangju Airport is next door. Beyond the trains, its one draw is food: the 1913 Songjeong Station Market across the road, and the street of tteokgalbi houses beside it.

Only three hotels came up in our sample within a short walk of the station, all at about £100–110 for two nights, more than the downtown median. Stay here for a dawn train or a late arrival, and eat tteokgalbi for supper; otherwise, take the metro into town.

Good for
  • Early or late trains
  • The airport next door
  • Tteokgalbi on the doorstep
Watch for
  • Twelve kilometres from downtown
  • Little to see on foot
  • Few hotels to choose from

Further out

Damyang, with its bamboo garden, and Mudeungsan, the mountain on the city’s eastern side, are the usual day trips. No guide we read suggests sleeping near either on a first visit; both are a bus or taxi ride from downtown.

Choosing a room in Gwangju

Gwangju has nothing like Jeonju’s village of traditional houses to sleep in, and in our sample few big chain hotels. Most of what you will be offered is one of four things.

Small downtown hotels

Independent hotels near the Asia Culture Center, most of them modest and well placed, and the cheapest rooms in our sample. Read the recent reviews for the age and size of the rooms.

The two renamed hotels

L7 Chungjang downtown and BREEV in Sangmu, both Ramada Plazas until March 2026 and now run by Lotte. Both are being renovated in stages while they stay open.

Sangmu’s business hotels

The larger, newer rooms, near City Hall and the convention centre, with restaurants and bars round them. The dearest rooms in our sample.

Floor-style rooms

Some Korean hotels offer rooms with bedding on a heated floor rather than a bed. Good for a family; less so if you cannot sleep low. Check the room type before you book.

Before you book

Our guide to accommodation in Korea covers what applies everywhere. What follows is particular to Gwangju.

When it fills up

Three times of year matter. Around 18 May the city commemorates the uprising, and the memorial sites and the hotels near them are at their busiest. In even-numbered years the Gwangju Biennale runs from September into November; the 2026 edition closes on 15 November. And the Gwangju Kimchi Festival comes in late October, from 23 to 25 October in 2026. Book ahead for any of them.

The platform of Gwangju Songjeong metro station: a long, bright, quiet platform with glass screen doors along its edge and yellow trim above.
The metro platform at Gwangju Songjeong. Line 1 runs from here through Sangmu to downtown, the one line the city has.

How many nights

Two nights give you a day for the history and a day for the art: the square and the Provincial Office one morning, the cafés, studios and Yangnim-dong’s lanes the next. A third night adds Mudeungsan or the bamboo at Damyang. A day trip from Seoul, at about two hours each way on the KTX, reaches the square, but little else.

Arriving

The KTX from Yongsan and the SRT from Suseo, both in Seoul, run to Gwangju Songjeong, not to the older Gwangju Station, which the KTX has not served since 2015; check your ticket. Line 1 of the metro starts at the station and runs through Sangmu to downtown. It is the city’s only line, and Line 2 is not now expected before the end of 2028. Express buses arrive at the U-Square terminal, which has no metro station; take a city bus or a taxi. Gwangju Airport, beside Songjeong, has domestic flights, including to Jeju. Muan International, the region’s airport for flights abroad, has been closed since the crash of December 2024.

The new name

On 1 July 2026 Gwangju and South Jeolla Province merged into a single new metropolitan city. Some Korean listings have begun to show the new name in addresses. The hotels, the stations and the metro are unchanged, and so is the city you will search for.

Staying with children

Downtown is compact and mostly flat, and the Asia Culture Center has a children’s centre. Sangmu’s larger hotels are the likelier place for a family room, with the 5·18 Memorial Park nearby for a run-around.

Staying in Gwangju with children
Rooms and occupancyMany small downtown hotels have double rooms only. Check how many people the room allows, and ask whether a family room exists.
Cots and extra bedsAsk before you book. Some Korean rooms are floor-style, with bedding laid on a heated floor, which makes room for a child without a cot.

Our view

From what we have read, we would stay two nights downtown, within a walk of the Asia Culture Center, and take the metro only to come and go.

A final word on staying in Gwangju

Sleep downtown: it is where the city’s story happened, where its art and cafés are, and, in our sample, the cheapest place to stay. Take Sangmu for a bigger hotel, and Songjeong only for the trains.
