Where to Stay in Port Stephens

Five places to sleep, which bay suits which trip, and what each costs against the others

For one night on the coast drive, stay in Nelson Bay. Park once, walk to the marina and to dinner, and leave in the morning. It has the most places to book, and the boats, the headland and the town are all within a few minutes of each other.

If you want something else from the stop:

  • The beach and the headland at the door — Shoal Bay.
  • A family stay on an ocean beach patrolled in the peak season — Fingal Bay.
  • The dunes, and the lowest prices — Anna Bay & Birubi Point.
  • A special night by a big pool — Soldiers Point & Salamander Bay.

Our Sydney to Brisbane road trip gives Port Stephens one night, and one night means choosing between the headland and the dunes. If you can add a second, you do not have to choose.

We have driven through Port Stephens but have not stayed there, so this page is researched. Every place we name is one we would look at, not one we have stayed in, and each was checked on its own website on the date given.

The stars are a quick read across the qualities most travellers weigh up — more stars means a stronger fit for that quality, not “better” overall. Price is shown as a band rather than stars, since cheaper isn’t a virtue in itself.

Price positions are relative to the other areas in this table, not market rates. They come from 30 properties on the peninsula with a live rate for one night, two adults, Tuesday 24 November 2026, read on 25 September 2026 and assigned to an area by the property’s own location. Shoal Bay (2 properties), Fingal Bay (2) and Anna Bay (4) rest on small samples. On the same night, measured the same way, Nelson Bay cost well under Byron Bay’s town centre and close to Melbourne’s city centre.

Where the areas are

Schematic map of the Tomaree Peninsula at Port Stephens, north at the top, with the five places to stay numbered one to five: Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay on the north shore facing the port; Fingal Bay on the ocean side south of Tomaree Head; Anna Bay, Birubi Point and One Mile on the southern ocean coast where the Stockton dunes begin; and Soldiers Point and Salamander Bay on the port's quieter south-western shore. Nelson Bay Road runs west towards Newcastle Airport.
The five areas, numbered in the order they are profiled below. Schematic, not to scale: every area is a short drive from Nelson Bay.

Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay sit side by side on the peninsula’s north shore, facing the calm water of the port, with Tomaree Head at the eastern end. Fingal Bay is just south of the headland, on the ocean. Anna Bay and One Mile face the ocean further south-west, where the dunes begin. Soldiers Point and Salamander Bay are to the west, on the port’s quieter shore.

Why stay here?

For one night on the coast drive, this is the answer. Nelson Bay is the main town, above the marina where the whale and dolphin cruises leave, and it has most of the restaurants and shops on the peninsula. Park once and walk to the water and to dinner. It also has by far the most places to book: fourteen of the thirty on the peninsula in our price sample.

Good for
  • One night, with the car parked
  • The boat trips at the marina
  • The widest choice: 14 of the 30 places in our sample
Watch for
  • A town, not a beach: the ocean beaches are a drive away
  • The busiest part of the peninsula
Where we would look
A small hotel on Government Road, a couple of minutes’ walk from the town’s shops and restaurants, with a café and a pool. Its site said the lift was out of service for a period, so check if stairs matter to you. Checked 25 September 2026.
Self-contained apartments on Tomaree Street, with a pool, a heated spa and a gym. There is no restaurant on site. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

Shoal Bay is the long beach running east from Nelson Bay to the foot of Tomaree Head. It faces the port, not the open ocean, and the summit walk is close by. It is quieter than the town, and a short drive or a long walk from it. Our sample found only two bookable places here, so look at holiday rentals too.

Good for
  • The beach at the door
  • Climbing Tomaree early, before the heat
  • Two or three nights
Watch for
  • Few bookable rooms
  • Most restaurants are in Nelson Bay, a drive or a long walk away
Where we would look
A resort hotel on the beachfront, looking over Shoal Bay. We could not confirm its dining or minimum stays on its site, so check before you book. Checked 25 September 2026.
A council-owned holiday park on Shoal Bay Road, across the road from the beach, with cafés and restaurants in walking distance. Cabins are self-catering. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

Fingal Bay is a curved bay on the ocean side of the peninsula, backed by the national park, with a surf club and lifeguard patrols on the beach in the peak season. Fingal Spit runs from it to the lighthouse island. It is quiet and self-contained, and its beds are holiday parks and a resort of apartments, which makes it the family choice.

Good for
  • Families, and a week rather than a night
  • A patrolled ocean beach
  • The national park on three sides
Watch for
  • You will want a car for everything else
  • Our sample found only two bookable places
Where we would look
Beach houses and sites across the road from the patrolled beach, with a pool and a playground. Self-catering. Checked 25 September 2026.
Two- and three-bedroom self-contained units on Marine Drive, with a large pool and a toddler pool. There is no staffed reception after hours, so arrange a late arrival in advance. Checked 25 September 2026.
Pause and notice

If you sleep at Fingal Bay, walk to the southern end of the beach in the late afternoon and look out along the spit to the lighthouse island. Give it ten minutes, and watch the water on either side of the sand rather than the island itself. NSW Parks warns that the tide and the swell change quickly here, and this is the place to see what that means. Then turn back to the bay behind you, and to the end of the day.

Why stay here?

The southern side of the peninsula faces the open ocean. It takes in Anna Bay and Birubi Point, at the northern end of the Stockton dunes, and One Mile and Boat Harbour, a few minutes further east. Its holiday parks were the cheapest beds on the peninsula in our sample. It suits a stay built around the dunes and the surf, and it is the first of the areas you reach from Newcastle Airport. For something different, the council’s Koala Sanctuary at One Mile has glamping tents and rooms, and guests can visit the sanctuary as often as they like.

Good for
  • The dunes at first light
  • The lowest prices on the peninsula
  • One Mile Beach, patrolled in the peak season
Watch for
  • A drive to Nelson Bay for dinner and the boats
  • Holiday parks rather than hotels
Where we would look
Cabins, glamping tents and sites on Gan Gan Road, with One Mile Beach on the doorstep. Self-catering, and you will need a car for the shops. Checked 25 September 2026.
Cabins, bungalows and a lodge in bushland on Nelson Bay Road at Anna Bay, beside the dunes. Read its rules on cancellation and pets before you book. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

The port’s south-western shore is quiet and mainly residential, looking north over calm water rather than the ocean. It is also where the top end of the market is. The two dearest places in our price sample were both here or close by: Bannisters at Soldiers Point, and The Anchorage at Corlette, on the same shore between Salamander Bay and Nelson Bay. It suits a special night, or a stay where the pool matters more than the surf.

Good for
  • A special night
  • Calm water and big pools
  • A quieter base than Nelson Bay
Watch for
  • A drive to the marina, the headland and the dunes
  • The two dearest places on the peninsula are here or close by
Where we would look
A boutique hotel at Soldiers Point with an infinity pool looking over the port and a Rick Stein restaurant. It was one of the two dearest places in our sample. Checked 25 September 2026.
An apartment resort on Sandy Point Road, Salamander Bay, built around a very large pool; some rooms have their own plunge pool. Its restaurant is run independently. Checked 25 September 2026.

Before you book

Our guide to accommodation in Australia covers what applies everywhere: how prices are shown, deposits and card holds, check-in times and accessible rooms. What follows applies to Port Stephens only.

What kind of place you will find

Port Stephens is a holiday coast, and most of what you can book is motels, self-contained apartments and holiday parks with cabins, with a small number of resort hotels. In our sample, Nelson Bay’s were mostly motels and apartments, most of them close to the marina. Outside Nelson Bay, our price sample found very few bookable places: two each at Shoal Bay and Fingal Bay. There, holiday rentals are worth a look alongside the listings. Unlike Byron Bay, Port Stephens has no state cap on the number of nights a holiday house can be let.

When it fills up

The pressure comes in the school holidays, and above all over summer. Check the New South Wales school calendar for your dates, and book early for Christmas, January and Easter. Between May and November the whale-watching cruises run daily from the marina, which is one more reason to sleep in Nelson Bay if the boats are the point of the stop. Over the same periods, some places take bookings only for a set run of nights, so if you want a single night, check the terms before you look at the price.

Late arrivals and early flights

Some self-contained resorts and holiday parks have no staffed desk late in the evening. If you are arriving after dark, check how you collect your key before you set off. Newcastle Airport is under half an hour away, and Anna Bay and One Mile are the nearest of the five areas to it, which makes them the easiest last night before an early flight.

Getting between the areas

Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay are close enough to walk between, and Port Stephens Coaches runs local buses on the peninsula as well as the services to Newcastle and Sydney. For Fingal Bay, Anna Bay and the western shore you will want a car, and on the coast drive you already have one. If you are arriving by coach without one, stay in Nelson Bay: it is the one area where the boats, the restaurants and the shops are all on foot.

If Port Stephens is full

Our price sample also picked up twelve places off the peninsula, mostly motels and holiday parks, at Karuah, Raymond Terrace, Heatherbrae, Williamtown and Fern Bay. As a group they had the lowest median price in the sample, and they can rescue a late arrival when the bays are full. What you give up is the water: from any of them, the bays, the headland and the boats are a drive back towards the coast.

If you want only one thing from the night

If it is the boats, stay in Nelson Bay. If it is the headland, stay in Shoal Bay. If it is the dunes, stay at Anna Bay. Everything else on the peninsula is a short drive from all three.

A final word on staying in Port Stephens

For one night, sleep in Nelson Bay and leave the car. For two, Shoal Bay gives you the beach and the headland, and Fingal Bay gives a family a beach of its own, patrolled in the peak season. If the price matters most, the holiday parks by the dunes are the cheapest beds on the peninsula. Whatever you choose, it is a short drive from everything else.
