Where to Stay in Port Macquarie

Four places to sleep, which part of town suits which trip, and what each costs against the others

For two nights, stay in the town centre or near Town Beach. Park once, and the breakwall, the beach that is patrolled every day of the year, the start of the Coastal Walk and dinner are all on foot. With two nights, take an apartment rather than a room.

If you want something else from the stop:

  • A quieter street, halfway along the Coastal Walk — Flynns and Shelly Beach.
  • A long beach and a longer stay — Lighthouse Beach.
  • The lowest price, and the river rather than the sea — Westport and Hastings River Drive.

Our Sydney to Brisbane road trip gives Port Macquarie two nights, the only stop on the drive where you unpack twice: one day for the town and its Coastal Walk, and one for the beaches to the north. Our guide to Port Macquarie has both days.

We have friends in Port Macquarie and have visited over many years, but we have never stayed in paid accommodation there, so this page is researched. Every place we name is one we would look at, not one we have stayed in, and each was checked on its own website on the date given.

The stars are a quick read across the qualities most travellers weigh up — more stars means a stronger fit for that quality, not “better” overall. Price is shown as a band rather than stars, since cheaper isn’t a virtue in itself.

Price positions are relative to the other areas in this table, not market rates. They come from 50 properties in and around Port Macquarie, 44 of them in these four areas, with a live rate for one night, two adults, Tuesday 24 November 2026, read on 25 September 2026 and assigned to an area by the property’s own location. Flynns and Shelly Beach (5 properties) and Lighthouse Beach (1) rest on small samples. On the same night, measured the same way, the typical price in the town centre was within the range of Coffs Harbour’s five areas, and well below Byron Bay’s town centre.

Where the areas are

Schematic map of Port Macquarie, north at the top and the Pacific Ocean to the east, with the four places to stay numbered: one, the town centre and Town Beach beside the breakwall at the mouth of the Hastings River; two, Flynns and Shelly Beach to the south-east along the Coastal Walk, next to the Sea Acres rainforest; three, Lighthouse Beach, south of Tacking Point Lighthouse; and four, Westport and Hastings River Drive, west of the centre along the river towards the airport.
The four areas, numbered in the order they are profiled below. Schematic, not to scale: Lighthouse Beach is about eight kilometres from the town centre by road.

The town centre sits where the Hastings River meets the sea, with the breakwall along the river mouth and Town Beach just round the corner. From there the Coastal Walk runs south-east, over the headlands to Flynns and Shelly Beach and past the Sea Acres rainforest to Tacking Point, with Lighthouse Beach beyond it. Westport and Hastings River Drive run west from the centre along the river, the way you drive in from the highway.

Why stay here?

For two nights, this is the answer. The town centre sits on the south bank of the Hastings River, and within a short walk you have the breakwall, Town Beach and the start of the Coastal Walk, as well as most of the restaurants. Town Beach is the one beach the council patrols every day of the year. Nearly half the places in our price sample were here, from motels to apartment hotels, so the choice is wide. With two nights on our road trip, this is the stop where an apartment rather than a room pays off.

Good for
  • Two nights with the car left parked
  • A swim on the one beach patrolled all year
  • The Coastal Walk from the door, and dinner on foot
Watch for
  • Mid-range rather than cheap: dearer than Westport
  • The cheapest beds are elsewhere, in Westport
Where we would look
An apartment hotel on William Street, about 150 metres from Town Beach by its own account, with hotel rooms and one- to three-bedroom apartments, an indoor heated pool, a spa and parking on site. Checked 25 September 2026.
Cabins and caravan sites along the breakwall at the river mouth, with a pool, and pets welcome. Reception is open from 8am to 6.30pm, and its site says the wifi is limited. Checked 25 September 2026.
Pause and notice

If you sleep near Town Beach, go down to the sand before breakfast, before the lifeguards put up the flags at nine. Look north to the breakwall and the mouth of the river, where the walls built between 1897 and 1904 hold the Hastings in its channel, and then south to the first headland, where the Coastal Walk climbs away towards Flynns. Everything the town is for lies between those two points. Stand there for a minute before you decide what to do with the day.

Why stay here?

Flynns Beach is the next beach along the Coastal Walk, about three kilometres south-east of the centre and five minutes by car, set between rocky points; Shelly Beach and the Sea Acres rainforest are just beyond. The streets behind are residential, and what you can book here is mostly self-contained apartments and a few bed-and-breakfasts. It is quieter than the town, and the Coastal Walk takes you into the centre on foot, but it was the dearest area in our sample, and small: five places.

Good for
  • A quieter stay of two nights or more
  • Walking the Coastal Walk in both directions
  • Families who want a kitchen and a pool
Watch for
  • The highest typical price in town
  • Flynns is patrolled only in the peak season
  • A small choice: five places in our sample
Where we would look
One- to three-bedroom apartments with kitchens and laundries, directly opposite Flynns Beach, with a heated pool, a spa and a children’s pool, and undercover parking for each apartment. Guests quoted on its site mention there is no lift, so ask about stairs if they matter. Checked 25 September 2026.
One- to three-bedroom villas on Surf Street, each with a full kitchen, a lock-up garage and linen provided. Its site does not mention a pool or reception hours. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

Lighthouse Beach runs south from Tacking Point Lighthouse for kilometres towards Lake Cathie, and it is the place for a long walk on the sand at the end of the Coastal Walk. It is about eight kilometres from the town centre, about ten minutes by car. There are almost no hotels: our sample found a single bookable place, and most of the beds here are holiday houses and units let privately. It suits a longer stay built around the beach more than a two-night stop.

Good for
  • A week of beach, with the car
  • Long walks on the sand
  • Families with a holiday house
Watch for
  • A drive for dinner and for the town
  • Patrolled only in the peak season
  • Almost no hotels: one in our sample, and a thin basis for the price band
Where we would look
Two self-contained, air-conditioned units about 300 metres from the beach, with secure parking. Pets are welcome in the ground-floor unit by arrangement. It publishes its rates through booking sites rather than its own. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

West of the town centre, the river side runs out past the marina and Westport Park, where the Coastal Walk begins, and then along Hastings River Drive, the main road in, lined with motels. This was the cheapest area in our sample, with the backpackers and the older motels at the bottom of the range and two resorts at the top. From the town end you can walk into the centre along a flat riverside path past the wharves; the far end of the strip is a drive. Take it if price matters most.

Good for
  • The lowest prices in town
  • The river and the marina rather than the sea
  • An early start north or an early flight
Watch for
  • A walk or a drive to the beaches
  • Traffic on Hastings River Drive outside the door
Where we would look
A resort on the marina on Park Street, with a heated pool, a tennis court and a private jetty with kayaks for guests. Reception is open 24 hours; parking is charged. It sits at the top of the price range here. Checked 25 September 2026.
A hostel at the town end of Hastings River Drive, with dormitories and private rooms with double bunks, a pool, a guest kitchen open all day and night, and free parking. Checked 25 September 2026.

Before you book

Our guide to accommodation in Australia covers what applies everywhere: how prices are shown, deposits and card holds, check-in times and accessible rooms. What follows applies to Port Macquarie only.

What kind of place you will find

Port Macquarie is a regional city on a holiday coast, and most of what you can book is motels, self-contained apartments and holiday parks, with a few resorts and apartment hotels. In our sample the motels were concentrated in two places: the town centre and Hastings River Drive. Towards the beaches the choice thins out to apartments, villas and bed-and-breakfasts, and at Lighthouse Beach to holiday houses let privately, which are worth a look alongside the listings.

When it fills up

The pressure comes in the school holidays, above all in summer, and around major events such as the Ironman triathlon, usually held in early May. Check the New South Wales school calendar for your dates, and on a two-night stop in the holidays, check any minimum stay before you look at the price.

Late arrivals

Several of the places we name do not give reception hours on their sites, and the holiday park closes its office in the early evening. The drive up from Port Stephens is about three hours; if you will arrive after dark, check how you collect your key before you set off.

Parking

On the coast drive you arrive with a car, and in the town centre the point is to park it for the whole of the first day. So before you book, check that the place has its own parking and whether it charges for it, rather than assuming a space on the street.

Swimming, and where the flags are

Where you stay decides where you swim before breakfast, so it is worth knowing that the patrols differ. According to the council, Town Beach is patrolled every day of the year, from 9am to 5pm. Flynns and Lighthouse Beach are patrolled only in the peak season, on dates the council sets each year. Outside those dates, and outside the flags at any time, the beaches are unpatrolled.

Access

The council’s visitor site describes a flat path from the town centre along the river past the wharves to Westport Park, and a colourful breakwall path with ramps from the town green to Town Beach. Beach wheelchairs can be booked for Town Beach and Flynns Beach, among others. If step-free access matters, the town centre is the easiest base, and ask each place about lifts before you book.

Getting between the areas

The town centre, Town Beach and the town end of Westport are close enough to walk between, along the river and the breakwall. Flynns is a walk of a few headlands along the Coastal Walk, or five minutes by car. For Lighthouse Beach and the far end of Hastings River Drive you will want the car, and on this road trip you have one.

If Port Macquarie is full

Our price sample picked up six places outside the four areas, most of them at Lake Cathie, about twenty minutes south by the coast road, with others across the river on the North Shore and in the hinterland. As a group they were no cheaper than the town centre, but they can rescue a late booking.

If you want only one thing from the stop

If it is the walk and a swim, stay in the town centre or by Town Beach. If it is a quiet street, stay at Flynns. If it is a long beach, stay at Lighthouse Beach. If it is the lowest price, stay on Hastings River Drive. Everything else in Port Macquarie is a short drive from all four.

A final word on staying in Port Macquarie

Base the two nights in the town centre or by Town Beach, in an apartment if you can: this is the one place on the drive where you unpack twice. Flynns is the quieter choice, and dearer; Lighthouse Beach is for a longer holiday than this one. If price matters most, the motels along Hastings River Drive are the cheapest beds in town, and the river is at the end of the road.
