Where to stay in Seoul

Seoul is huge, but the decision is simple: nearly everything a first-time visitor wants sits in the historic core north of the Han River, so the best default is to base yourself there — in Myeongdong or Insadong/Jongno — and let the excellent metro reach the rest. Younger travellers and night owls should look west to Hongdae; those after modern polish or business convenience, south to Gangnam.

The quick answer

  • First-time visitor, want it easyMyeongdong. Central, on two subway lines, walkable to the palaces and Namsan, wrapped in shopping and street food.
  • Prefer atmosphere and calm eveningsInsadong / Jongno. In the historic core beside the palaces and Bukchon, quieter after dark.
  • Young, social, on a budgetHongdae. Seoul's cheapest and liveliest base, and on the airport line.
  • Modern, upscale or here for businessGangnam. Polished and well-served, but further from the historic sights.
  • Short stopover or early flightHongdae or Seoul Station, both on the direct AREX airport train.

How to choose

Four things decide it. Proximity to the sights — six of Seoul's eight marquee attractions sit in the Jongno/Jung-gu historic core, so staying there means walking, not commuting. Transport — anywhere on a couple of subway lines is fine, but a hub like Myeongdong or Seoul Station saves changes. Airport access — the AREX express train runs Incheon to Seoul Station and Hongik University (Hongdae), handy for tight arrivals. Vibe and budget — historic-core calm, Hongdae energy, or Gangnam gloss, at rising prices as you go upmarket.

Which is right for you?

  1. Choose the historic core (Myeongdong or Insadong/Jongno) if it's your first trip, your time is short, or the palaces and old Seoul are the priority. You'll walk to most of what you came for.
  2. Choose Hongdae if you're travelling on a budget, want the nightlife and café scene, or need the airport train for a tight arrival or departure.
  3. Choose Gangnam if you want a modern, upscale stay, you're here for business, or the south of the city is your focus — and you don't mind commuting to the historic sights.
  4. Whichever you pick, stay within a short walk of a subway station: in Seoul, that matters more than the district itself.

Book ahead for the spring blossom and autumn-foliage peaks, when central rooms get scarce and dear. For getting from the airport and around the city, see Getting around South Korea; for costs and tax refunds, Money, customs & tax refunds.

Where to stay in Seoul: FAQs

What's the best area to stay in Seoul for first-time visitors?

Myeongdong, or the neighbouring historic core around Insadong and Jongno. Both are central, well-connected on the subway, and within walking distance of the palaces, Bukchon and Namsan — six of Seoul's eight main sights are in this area, so you spend less time commuting.

Where should I stay in Seoul on a budget?

Hongdae, west of the river, is the cheapest and liveliest base, full of guesthouses and hostels, with a direct airport-train link. It's a metro ride from the historic sights but strong on nightlife, cafés and cheap food.

Is Gangnam a good place to stay?

Yes if you want modern, upscale Seoul, are here for business, or are focused on the south of the city — it has the sleekest hotels and dining. The trade-off is distance: you'll commute by metro to the palaces and old town, and prices are the city's highest.

How do I get from Incheon Airport to the city?

The AREX express train runs from Incheon to Seoul Station and to Hongik University (Hongdae) in under an hour; limousine buses and taxis also serve the main hotel districts. Staying near Seoul Station or in Hongdae makes a tight arrival or departure easiest. See our Getting around guide for detail.
