Getting around hits different when you’re a tourist vs when you actually live here.
As visitors, we have it pretty good. The trains, Metro, trams and buses mostly carry. The Opal card? Elite. Tap on, tap off, no drama. The new Metro stations are kinda a vibe too — especially Gadigal station. So much space, not giving claustrophobic at all. Signage makes sense, there are lifts and escalators everywhere, and honestly even as a first-time tourist it’s not that hard to figure out.
Today we missioned through the system to the new fish market (actually slaps) and then Sydney Museum — which is good, just a bit niche in what it focuses on.
But zooming out? The transport glow-up isn’t everywhere. Not enough buses. Not enough cycle paths. And once you’re out in the suburbs it’s basically car or nothing. Which means… yeah. Way too many cars. Bit of an L.
Not sure if Sydney’s fully in its public transport era yet, but we’ll see.
