Where to Stay in Byron Bay

Six places to sleep, what each costs against the others, and what to do if Byron is full

For one night on the coast drive, stay in the town centre. Park once, walk to the beach and to dinner, and leave in the morning. Byron is the busiest stop on the coast and the least likely to have a room left on the day, so book the bed before anything else.

If you want something else from the stop:

  • Two nights, a beach, and quiet — Belongil.
  • The lighthouse at the door, at a price — Wategos and the Cape.
  • A family week with a car — Suffolk Park and Tallow Beach.
  • Byron is full — Brunswick Heads to the north, or Lennox Head to the south.

One night is enough for the Cape walk or the beach, not both, and our Sydney to Brisbane road trip gives Byron one night for that reason. If you can add a second night, add it here: it turns the busiest stop on the coast into the one you are not leaving the next morning.

We have driven through Byron but have not stayed there, so this page is researched. Every place we name is one we would look at, not one we have stayed in, and each was checked on its own website on the date given.

The stars are a quick read across the qualities most travellers weigh up — more stars means a stronger fit for that quality, not “better” overall. Price is shown as a band rather than stars, since cheaper isn’t a virtue in itself.

Price positions are relative to the other areas in this table, not market rates. They come from 51 properties with a live rate for one night, two adults, Tuesday 24 November 2026, read on 25 September 2026 and assigned to an area by the property’s own location. Wategos (1 property), Lennox Head (3) and Suffolk Park (5) rest on small samples. On the same night, measured the same way, the town centre cost well under Sydney’s city centre and harbour, and well over Melbourne’s city centre.

Where the areas are

Schematic map of the coast around Byron Bay, north at the top, with the six places to stay numbered one to six: Byron town centre on the bay; Belongil to its west along the beach; Wategos and the Cape at the lighthouse to the east; Suffolk Park and Tallow Beach to the south; Brunswick Heads at the river mouth to the north; and Lennox Head further south towards Ballina. The Pacific Motorway runs inland, Bangalow is marked inland, and arrows point north to the Gold Coast airport and south to Ballina Byron airport.
The six areas, numbered in the order they are profiled below. Schematic, not to scale: Brunswick Heads and Lennox Head are each a short drive from the town.

The town centre sits on the bay, with Belongil running west from it along the beach and Wategos under the lighthouse to the east. Suffolk Park is on the far side of the Cape, facing the open ocean. The two fallbacks lie either side on the coast road: Brunswick Heads to the north, and Lennox Head to the south on the way from Ballina.

Why stay here?

For one night on a coast drive, this is the answer. Main Beach is at the end of the street, Jonson and Lawson Streets hold most of the town’s cafés and restaurants, and the coaches stop in the centre. Main Beach, the one beach patrolled all year, is also the family choice for a swim. Park once and walk. It is also the one part of Byron where holiday lets can still be rented all year, so it has the most beds.

Good for
  • One night, with the car parked
  • Everything on foot, including the beach
  • The widest choice, from hostels to hotels
Watch for
  • The dearest of the everyday areas
  • Busy and loud late at night
  • Parking in the street is paid
Where we would look
Apartments in the town centre, with parking included, which matters in a town where street parking is paid. Checked 25 September 2026.
A hostel a short walk from Main Beach, with private rooms as well as dorms, and a heated pool. Parking is limited, so ask before you arrive with a car. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

Belongil runs west from the town along the bay, with the beach on one side and the creek behind. It is quieter than the centre and still near enough to walk in for dinner, and the solar train runs from the town to North Beach station on Bayshore Drive, at the far end. It suits two nights more than one.

Good for
  • A beach at the door, without the noise of the centre
  • Two or three nights
  • A walk or a train ride into town
Watch for
  • Few shops or restaurants of its own
  • The far end is a long walk from the centre
Where we would look
A resort of villas directly on Belongil Beach, at the far end of the area. Checked 25 September 2026.
Cabins and sites on Ewingsdale Road, about 2 km from the centre, for a family with a car. Checked 25 September 2026.
Pause and notice

If you sleep at Belongil, go down to the sand before breakfast and turn east. The bay curves away from you towards the town, and the lighthouse stands on the headland at the far end of it, with the sun coming up behind. Walk towards it for ten minutes. Feel how cool the sand is before the day warms it, and listen for when the sound of the surf is joined by the town waking up.

Why stay here?

Wategos is a small north-facing cove under the lighthouse, and The Pass is just to the west. Staying here puts the Cape walk at your door. It is also the hardest place in Byron to book. Our price sample found one bookable hotel here, and it was the dearest on the page; the rest is private houses, held to 60 nights a year.

Good for
  • The lighthouse walk at first light
  • A cove to swim in on a calm day
  • A special night
Watch for
  • Very few rooms, and the highest prices
  • Little else here: dinner means a drive or a walk
  • Parking near the Cape is short-stay and paid
Where we would look
A small boutique hotel on the beach at Wategos, with 17 rooms. Book well ahead. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

Suffolk Park is a residential suburb south of the Cape, behind Tallow Beach and Arakwal National Park. It is quieter and a little cheaper than the town, and it suits a family, a longer stay or anyone with a car. Holiday lets here are held to 60 nights a year, so motels and holiday parks carry more of the weight.

Good for
  • Families, and a week rather than a night
  • Tallow Beach and the national park
  • Parking that is easy and free
Watch for
  • You will want a car to reach the town
  • Few places to eat on foot
  • Tallow Beach is patrolled only in the summer holidays
Where we would look
A motel across the road from Tallow Beach, with free parking. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

If Byron is full, look north first. Brunswick Heads is a small river town where the Brunswick River meets the sea, a short drive up the coast. It is the one other place in Byron Shire where holiday lets are not held to 60 nights, so it has beds when Byron does not, and in our sample it cost little more than half as much. Its holiday parks, with cabins on the river, suit families.

Good for
  • A bed when Byron is full
  • A quieter, older-fashioned beach town
  • Lower prices for the same coast
Watch for
  • You will drive into Byron, and park there
  • Fewer places to eat late
Where we would look
A motel where the river meets the sea, with its own pool. Checked 25 September 2026.
A holiday park with cabins on the river, a walk from the surf beach. No dogs. Checked 25 September 2026.

Why stay here?

Lennox Head is the fallback to the south, on the coast road between Ballina airport and Byron. It is a small surf town with a long beach, cafés on its main street and prices in our sample well below Byron’s. Self-contained apartments make it an easy base for a family. It suits a reader flying into Ballina, or anyone happy to drive in for the evening.

Good for
  • A first or last night near Ballina airport
  • A long beach and a quieter town
  • Value
Watch for
  • You will drive into Byron, and park there
  • An evening in Byron means a drive back after dinner
Where we would look
Self-contained apartments one street back from the main street, a walk from the beach and the cafés. Checked 25 September 2026.
A motel about 150 metres from Seven Mile Beach, with free parking and kitchens in the larger units. Checked 25 September 2026.

Before you book

Our guide to accommodation in Australia covers what applies everywhere: how prices are shown, deposits and card holds, check-in times and accessible rooms. What follows applies to Byron only.

Why Byron fills up

Since September 2024, unhosted holiday lets across most of Byron Shire can be rented for only 60 nights a year. The town centre and Brunswick Heads are the exceptions. So there are fewer holiday houses to rent than the size of the place suggests, and hotels, motels and holiday parks carry most of the load.

The pressure peaks in the school holidays, and above all over Christmas and January, when the New South Wales and Queensland holidays both fill the coast. Check both states’ calendars for your dates. Schoolies, when school-leavers come to Byron to celebrate, falls in late November and early December; its organisers put 2026 at about 28 November to 5 December, so treat those dates as a guide and check them.

What kind of place you will find

Byron has few large hotels. Most of what you can book is motels, serviced apartments, a handful of small boutique hotels, hostels and holiday parks with cabins, and the holiday parks are the best value for a family. Our price sample found only one bookable hotel at Wategos and a couple of guesthouses at Bangalow, which is why neither place is a safe bet for a last-minute night.

If you have an early flight

Ballina Byron Gateway, the nearest airport, is about half an hour from the town and takes flights from Sydney and Melbourne only. For an early departure, a last night at Lennox Head puts you closer to it. The Gold Coast airport, with more routes, is under an hour north; from there, Brunswick Heads is the nearer of the two fallbacks. Airport shuttles run to a timetable, so check the first service of the day before you book an early flight.

Minimum stays and fixed check-in days

Over Christmas, New Year and Easter, some places in Byron take bookings only for a set run of nights or from a set check-in day. If you want a single night at those times, check the terms before you look at the price.

Parking and late arrivals

Street parking in the town centre is paid, so ask whether your booking includes a space. If you are arriving by coach or from an airport shuttle, check the last service against your check-in time, because the shuttles run to a timetable and not every property has a desk open late.

If Byron is full

Look at Brunswick Heads first: it is the one place in the shire, other than the town centre, where holiday lets are not capped, and our sample found it cheapest. Lennox Head is the choice to the south, and the natural stop if you fly into Ballina. Inland, Bangalow has a couple of guesthouses and a far quieter night. All three mean driving in for the evening, and paying to park.

A final word on staying in Byron Bay

For one night, sleep in the town centre and leave the car. For two, Belongil gives you the beach and the quiet. If Byron is full, don’t fight it: Brunswick Heads and Lennox Head sit on the same coast, cost less, and are a short drive from the lighthouse. Whatever you choose, book it first.
