Cost of Visiting New Zealand
What a day really costs — and where the money goes
New Zealand’s reputation for being expensive is half earned. The beds, the hire car and the big days out are where the money goes; a coffee, a casual meal and a bus fare are not dear, and the walks, the beaches and the forests cost nothing at all. On the same choices, a day here costs less than in Sydney, Hong Kong or Tokyo.
In March 2026 we spent several weeks touring the North Island by hire car, four of us together, staying in apartments, B&Bs and motels. Here is what a day costs at three levels of comfort, how New Zealand compares with Australia and Asia, and where the real savings are.
- Careful: NZ$115–190 a day (about £49–81 / $64–106): a hostel bed, cheap meals out, buses and trains.
- Comfortable: NZ$245–340 a day (about £104–144 / $137–190): half a four-star double, a mid-range dinner, a paid sight.
- Indulgent: NZ$360 a day and up (about £153 / $201 and up): a five-star room, a tasting menu now and then, taxis.

A realistic daily budget
The table is the budget; the rest of the page explains it. Each row adds across to the daily total. It prices a day based in Auckland without a car; touring by car is costed in the worked example further down.
| Style | Accommodation | Food and drink | Getting around | Paid experiences | Daily total | What this looks like |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Careful | NZ$40–60 | NZ$65–85 | NZ$10–20 | NZ$0–25 | NZ$115–190 | A hostel bed in central Auckland; two cheap meals out and a fast-food meal; buses and trains; a paid sight every other day |
| Comfortable | NZ$100–130 | NZ$100–135 | NZ$15–25 | NZ$30–50 | NZ$245–340 | Half a four-star double; a café lunch and a mid-range dinner, coffees and a beer; a short taxi every other day; a paid sight most days |
| Indulgent | NZ$115+ | NZ$160–210 | NZ$35–55 | NZ$50–100 | NZ$360+ | Half a five-star double; a tasting-menu dinner every third day; drinks; taxis; a paid sight or two a day |
Against the other countries we cover, on the same choices from the same basket, an Auckland day costs about what a Tokyo one does at the careful end, and is the cheapest of the five in comfort and in luxury, because Auckland’s hotel rooms cost far less than those in Sydney, Hong Kong or Tokyo.
| Country | Careful | Comfortable | Indulgent |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Korea (Seoul) | £61 / $80 | £125 / $166 | £286 / $378 |
| Hong Kong | £61 / $81 | £139 / $183 | £336 / $443 |
| Japan (Tokyo) | £67 / $89 | £159 / $210 | £330 / $435 |
| New Zealand (Auckland) | £69 / $91 | £122 / $162 | £193 / $254 |
| Australia (Sydney) | £94 / $124 | £163 / $215 | £304 / $402 |

Fines run from NZ$200 to NZ$800. Ask your rental company, in writing, whether its vehicle is certified under the new rules.

How to spend less
The biggest savings are decided before you land: when you go, where you sleep and what you drive.
| Decision | Effect on the total | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| When you go | Hire cars and campervans cost nearly twice as much in summer as in the shoulder; Christmas to January is the peak | Go in March–April or October–November; see when to go |
| Where you sleep | The same motel unit costs two to three times as much in Queenstown as in a provincial town | Base yourself outside the resort towns and drive in |
| Car or campervan | A campervan replaces the room but costs more to hire and, if diesel, pays road user charges | Price both for your dates, with fuel and charges included |
| Travelling alone | The room and the car no longer halve: about half as much again a day | Choose a hostel or a holiday-park cabin |
| The big paid days | A heli-hike or a Milford day costs more than a comfortable day | Choose two or three, and book them first |
| Insurance and entry | NZ$117 for the NZeTA and levy before you leave, plus insurance | Price the insurance before you book anything else |
Sleep
- Take a holiday-park cabin or a motel unit rather than a hotel. A cabin for two runs NZ$75–130 a night, and most motel units have a kitchenette, which changes the food budget too.
- Travel as four and share a two-bedroom apartment. Our March 2026 apartments came to NZ$59–104 each a night, GST and cleaning fees included: NZ$712 for three nights in Parnell, Auckland, and NZ$2,903 for a week at Ōpua in the Bay of Islands — against NZ$100–130 each for half a four-star double.
- Stay outside the resort towns. In our August 2026 research a motel unit in a small town cost NZ$150–225 a night, against NZ$315–550 in Queenstown.
Eat and drink
- Use the kitchenette and the supermarket for lunch. It takes about NZ$30–60 a day off a couple’s food spend.
- Buy wine and beer at the supermarket. A Marlborough sauvignon blanc costs NZ$15–25 a bottle there; a single glass in a bar costs NZ$11–16.
Get around
- Hire in the shoulder season. In the aggregator quotes we read in August 2026, a small car cost a little over half its summer rate in March–April and October–November.
- Ask how diesel is charged before you book a campervan. On a 3,000 km loop in a four-berth, road user charges add about NZ$250 against about NZ$93 saved on the cheaper fuel.
- Book domestic flights six to eight weeks ahead, when the cheapest seats are still there.
See and do
- Book Hobbiton before anything else. When we tried in March 2026 it was booked solid for about six weeks.
- Go to Te Papa twice on one ticket: the NZ$35 international ticket is valid for 48 hours.
What is free
- Department of Conservation day walks, including, for now, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the Hooker Valley track; access charges for international visitors are planned at four sites from 2027/28.
- The beaches, the forests and Rotorua’s Redwoods.
- Auckland’s volcanic cones and the Domain.
- The free part of Hamilton Gardens, which is where we spent our time in March 2026; the enclosed gardens charge.
- Tap water, and no tipping.
Build your trip total
Add the parts in this order: what you pay before you go + the daily cost × the days + shared costs divided by the number of you + the booked big days + a contingency. The daily figure already includes your room; a hire car and its fuel are shared costs. Count arrival and departure as half days each.
| Item | Per person | How we reached it |
|---|---|---|
| Before you go: NZeTA and levy | NZ$117 | By the app |
| Daily cost, 13 days | NZ$3,770 | NZ$290 a day, the middle of the comfortable row |
| Hire car, 14 days | NZ$630 | Our allowance, not a quote: NZ$90 a day, shared by two |
| Fuel, about 1,500 km | NZ$180 | 120 litres at about NZ$3, shared |
| One big day: Hobbiton | NZ$130 | Booked ahead |
| Contingency, 10% of the daily cost | NZ$377 | The daily spending is all still unbooked |
| Total, before flights and insurance | NZ$5,204 | about £2,205 / $2,910 |
Before you book, check six things:
- replace our room and car figures with live prices for your dates;
- add the paid days you actually intend to book;
- price travel insurance — a cost before you leave, not part of the contingency;
- check what the car price includes: insurance excess, one-way fees, road user charges;
- convert your currency once, at a dated rate, and allow for your card’s fee; and
- keep a contingency in proportion to what is still unbooked.
What not to cut: travel insurance, a vehicle suited to the roads and the weather, and the days you came for.
What changes next year
Where a new figure has not been published, we say so rather than guess it.
| Change | When | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Access charges for international visitors at Cathedral Cove, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Aoraki / Mount Cook and Milford Sound | Expected for summer 2027/28; amount not yet decided | Up |
| Hire car and campervan rates for the summer peak | December 2026 to February 2027 | Up, roughly double the shoulder |
How we priced this pageWe price the same basket of 25 items in every country we cover, in each main city: here, Auckland. Meals, drinks and single fares come from Numbeo; fares and admissions from the operators’ own pages; rooms from our own sample of real hotels, made year-round with trivago’s forecast; day tours from GetYourGuide and Viator. The basket was checked on 8 October 2026; car, ferry and fuel figures in August 2026. The figures are a model for planning and comparison, not a quote. How we work out costs
So — is New Zealand expensive?
In places. The beds, the car and the booked days are dear, and they are most of the budget; the everyday things are not, and a day here costs less than in Sydney, Hong Kong or Tokyo. But the best of the country — the walks, the coast, the forests — costs nothing at all, and it is the part we remember.

How much does two weeks in New Zealand cost?
About NZ$5,200 each for a fortnight touring the North Island by car at the comfortable level, on our worked example above, before flights and insurance. Hostels, buses and fewer paid days bring it down a long way; the builder above prices your own version.
Is New Zealand more expensive than the UK?
Day to day, often cheaper: a cappuccino in Auckland is about £2.60 (NZ$6.08) against £3.20–5.00 in Britain, and an Auckland bus fare about £1.27 against £1.75 for a London bus (UK prices August 2026). The beds, the hire car and the booked experiences are dearer, and they are most of the budget.
Is New Zealand more expensive than Australia?
No. On the same comfortable choices, a day in Auckland costs about £122 against £163 in Sydney, most of the difference in the room.
What does it cost to enter New Zealand?
NZ$117 for most visitors: the NZeTA at NZ$17 by the official app, plus the NZ$100 international visitor levy. Australian citizens need neither; Australian permanent residents need the NZeTA but not the levy.
