It poured all day — the plan to walk or cycle abandoned before it began, and the afternoon spent making short dashes between the hotel shuttle and a table. Which is no bad way to end up in front of a bowl of wonton noodles.
A Hong Kong wonton isn’t quite the dumpling most visitors picture. The classic bowl is wonton noodle soup: thin egg noodles in a clear broth, with a few wontons wrapped in a fine, almost translucent skin and filled — in the best places — with whole prawns and a little pork. It’s fast, cheap, everyday food, and exactly what you want when the rain has beaten your plans.
We found ours close to home, at Congee King in City Link Plaza — the mall wrapped around Sha Tin station — which, despite the name over the door, turns out an excellent bowl. We ate too fast, and watched Sha Tin disappear into the weather. Some of the best meals are the ones the day forces on you.
