Leaving Hong Kong is never easy. We have family here and a long list of things we love — the people, the food, the walks, the markets — and though we’ve visited many times, staying out in Sha Tin was new, and it turned out to be a fine place to be based. We’ll be back.
Packed up, we left the Alva Hotel mid-afternoon and took the shuttle down to West Kowloon, where the MTR, the Airport Express and the high-speed rail terminus all sit together — one of those pieces of infrastructure that quietly tells you how seriously this part of the world takes moving people about. We took the Airport Express, which is fast and, by Hong Kong standards, dear: around HK$105 one way against roughly HK$27–31 on the bus. For speed and ease it earns its price. Security and immigration were quick and unfussy, and we were at the gate in good time for the 23:30 departure.
